Overwhelming success rate for taxpayers challenging HMRC

17 Aug 2016

According to recent figures released by the Government, taxpayers who challenge a penalty from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are overwhelmingly successful, with a 52% win rate. Those who approach HMRC requesting a change in the amount of tax they owe are successful a third of the time, almost one in five taxpayers who take HMRC to a tribunal are successful, and the taxman changes its mind in 65% of cases where they are challenged about a VAT penalty. To add to this, success rates appealing a tribunal decision are up from 13% (2015) to 18% for 2016.
